Fieseler Fi 156 Storch A-100, Germany 1944Pioneer of air rescueThe Fieseler Storch (English: Stork) is a piston engine-powered aircraft deployed by the German Luftwaffe on liaison and observation duties during the Second World War. It is capable of landing/taking off on almost any terrain. The wing flaps extend along the entire wingspan, their outermost parts also acting as ailerons. Combined with the fixed wing slats, they provide a large amount of lift at low speeds. The aircraft on display was flown non-stop from Hungary to Chur in Switzerland by a group of German army personnel at the end of the Second World War (image). It was seized by the Swiss Air Force and re-registered A-100.Two such “Storks” of the Swiss Air Force, equipped with runners in addition to wheels, made a name for themselves in November 1946 when their pilots landed on the Gauli Glacier in the Bernese Oberland to rescue the survivors of an American military plane crash. This marked the birth of air rescue in mountainous regions.
